Beer is probably the most convenient beverage to serve; unlike champagne, you can find it almost anywhere, and you don’t even have to use a glass to serve it (depending on, of course, the ambience of your gathering). There are also a ton of beers to choose from, from your comfortable, I-just-got-home-from-work-and-need-a-beer beer, to your fancy, subtle-undertones-of-oak-and-elderflower craft beer, there’s a beer for everybody.

As you’re revving into celebration mode this month, consider the merits of a good ol’ brewski as an offering to friends and guests.

  1. Beer is beyond classic. It has been around since the 5th millennium BC, and has been argued to be the key to human civilization.

  2. The weather’s warming up—fancy a shandy? If you’ve never had one, here’s what it is—and it’s a great reason to have a beer.

  3. If you’re not up on your craft and local beers, this is reason in itself to get out and have a bit of a beer adventure. You’re likely to discover something delicious!

  4. On Spring Break, beer is the drink of champions, and the gateway drink for many a raucous party. (Enjoy responsibly.)

  5. The upcoming baseball season warrants a beer or two, as does any sporting event in fact; sports and beer are pretty much a given.

  14. Happy Hour beers are the way to break that midweek slump.

  15. May Day is a great reason to crack open a brew with friends, and celebrate the wonder that is sunshine! Mark your calendars now.

  16. Hosting a barbecue? Beer is most likely going to be the most in-demand beverage at your shindig, and nothing goes better with burgers and ‘dogs.

  17. Ounce for ounce, beer is typically the cheapest alcoholic beverage to serve if you’re having a get-together.

  18. Your President commends it. Also, the White House brews its own beer, so drinking beer is patriotic in many ways!

  1. The sheer variety! There are over 400 different types of beer, from well-known lagers and stouts to more obscure Rauchbeir, or smoked beers, and dry-hopped beers. It’s worth tasting a few to see what suits your palate.

  2. It’s a few months away yet, but we can’t leave out Oktoberfest—the biggest beer festival in existence, whose original Münich festival attracts six million visitors each year. (Here’s a list of Oktoberfests that might be closer to home.)
